Skype 5 for Mac: Redesigned →
Matthias Kampitsch:
Skype 5 has serious UI problems and people are starting complaining in Facebook fan pages and commenting the blog furiously.
That’s why I started designing a new UI for Skype 5. Here are the results.
I’m certainly not planning on upgrading my currently installed version until Skype come up with something better. Like this.

The two ways to get a new podcast episode onto your iPhone are either: (a) tap “get more episodes”, be taken to the iTunes app and then pick a single episode to download to your iPhone, wait for it to download, return to the iPod app and play the episode; or else (b) sync your iPhone to your computer and transfer any new episodes which have downloaded to your computer onto your...

Way Wrong Zero
Way to go Merlin. Hope that Sitepoint have the decency to publish your comment. Somehow I doubt they do.
merlin:
Since Sitepoint’s being poky about posting my comment on this ill-conceived corn bolus on the “myth” of Inbox Zero, I’m pasting my response here.
For posterity and whatnot.

Don’t worry about the newspaper industry, guys. They’re doing just fine.
An appeal.

Alex Payne, in Don’t Be A Hero:
If someone is working at four in the morning, something is deeply wrong. Figure out what’s broken and delegate the work out evenly across your team such that it doesn’t happen again. Don’t pat your hero on the back for “pulling another late-nighter”.
This is one reason why, when looking for a job a few years ago, I didn’t consider working for any...

This would be a perfect candidate for creating a mobile version using as a web app, rather than a native iPhone app.
App Store vs. Web Apps
stevenf:
Slightly longer version of a tweet from this morning:
Apple makes the iPhone SDK. They’re also one of (if not the) biggest contributors to WebKit.
WebKit’s capabilities continue to grow exponentially. I’m blown away by what can be done with it today. If development continues apace (and there’s no reason to believe it won’t) it seems realistic that within a reasonable amount of...
Why "maudlyn"?

Cool little language we got there.

Follow up on Adobe's shutdown in June
Back in June I posted some thoughts on the possible reasons behind Adobe’s week long shutdown.
So, this week, Abobe likely pays most of its employees from the $160M pot of money labelled “Accrued compensation and benefits” in its Q2 accounts. Doing some rough calculations, if each employee has 5 weeks accrued vacation this will convert over $30M from a liability held on their balance sheet...

Tweetie 2 upgrade pricing
There’s a good debate raging over the announcement from atebits, the developer of the excellent Tweetie for iPhone, that version 2 will be a new application, priced the same as the old version.
I fully support the right of a developer to charge whatever they want for an application, and agree that upgrades are a hugely important revenue stream for developers. And in this case I’ll...
Ideal Mobile Internet Device
I absolutely agree with Steve Frank on this:
stevenf:
Let me preface this by saying that I have much love for Pocketables and Jenn is one of the few people I think can legitimately claim to be an even greater gadget-hound than myself. So, I don’t mean any disrespect.
What caught my eye was an article called What is your ideal mobile internet device?

Updated: My Omnivore's Hundred
Exactly one year ago I posted my Omnivore’s Hundred list, which was the current meme-de-jour. Since then I’ve been making some steady progress, so this is my update. I’ve only included foods that I’ve eaten for the first time since posting the original list (in bold), and foods I’ve still never eaten.
Nettle tea
Huevos rancheros
Steak tartare
Crocodile
Carp

My good friends Will and Becky have gone crazy, although crazy in a “wish I was crazy enough to do doing that” kind of way. They’ve got themselves a VW Campervan called Jules, and are preparing for a 15,000 mile trip around Europe.

Abobe's Shutdown
John Gruber published a post yesterday about the news that Abobe is essentially closed this week. The response from Abobe’s John Nack seemed a little defensive.
Let me first mention that these Adobe shutdowns are nothing new. I’ve worked here for 9 years, and the company has done the shutdowns off and on throughout that time—at least since ‘01 or ‘02. I didn’t...

There are three technologies I hope get to the point where I’m willing to buy into them this year. They’re all things I’ve been watching and wanting to buy, but every time I look, they’re not quite where I want.
I also want all of these technologies, but there’s a common theme behind why I don’t own any of them yet.

Selecting a camera mode →
I must admit that most of the time I shoot in aperture priority mode, especially when using my 50mm f/1.4 and I want to make sure I get a shallow depth of field. But in this post on the This Week in Photography blog, Scott Bourne makes an excellent case for using shutter priority mode, especially on a camera with low noise at higher ISO settings (like my new 5D Mark II, for example).
This is...

nVidia chipset for all Macs
MacRumors is reporting a story that future iMacs and Mac Minis will use the nVidia chipset introduced in the latest MacBooks. Evidence has been found in OSX configuration files. Interesting as this is, it should hardly be surprising.
With the exception of the Mac Pro, all Macs are essentially laptops. Both the Mac Mini and the iMac broke new ground in the industry by introducing form factors...

iPhone Tethering
It’s reported that in an interview with TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega suggested that it might be possible to tether an iPhone to a laptop “soon”.
I for one would be very happy to see this introduced. Existing tethering options require me to either jailbreak my iPhone or buy a wireless modem with a high monthly fee and a data cap...
Going the extra mile for Sunderland →
I remember receiving an award at school that was presented to me by Steve Cram. It was probably the highlight of my time at school. Again, football was the reason he was involved in the ceremony; Steve sat next to our headmaster at Roker Park, and had a agreed to come along to help out.
As someone who had grown up watching Steve win just about every race he entered, he was synonymous with...
