Why “maudlyn”?
Stress added:
Main Entry: maud·lin
Pronunciation: \ˈmȯd-lən\
Function: adjective
Etymology: alteration of Mary Magdalene; from her depiction as a weeping penitent
Date: 1509
1 : drunk enough to be emotionally silly
2 : weakly and effusively sentimentalOkay. That’s pretty awesome and totally new to me.
Cool little language we got there.
Fascinating. When I lived in Cambridge I wondered why the Cambridge and Oxford colleges named after Mary Magdalene have this pronunciation, but apparently they get to the same place through the vanity of man called Audley. Ultimately they come from the same Middle English version of Mary Magdalene name.
